Curry County was established in 1909 and named after George Curry, Territorial Governor of New Mexico (1907-1910).  Curry County was created from parts of Quay and Roosevelt counties.  It lies on the far eastern side of the state and is adjacent to the state of Texas.

Curry County is 1405.9 square miles, making it one of the smallest counties in New Mexico.  The County Seat is Clovis, New Mexico.  Cities located in Curry County are Clovis, Melrose, Texico, Grady and Cannon Air Force Base.  The approximate population for the county is over 50,000.

The Board of Curry County Commission is pleased to initiate a land use planning process. This process will culminate in the development of a local land use and natural resource plan which complies with state and federal statutes, and that can be used to influence federal agency decisions as required by federal statute. Federal statutes require a consistency review between federal agency plans or decisions and local land use policies and plans and gives local governments the ability to participate as cooperating agencies in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis process.

Often confused with zoning, this land use plan will provide policy guidance when federal planning processes are impacting private lands. For example, the land use plan can be used as part of the local government’s response when it receives a notice of species listing or proposed critical habitat designations under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Critical habitat designations in New Mexico are also subject to the mandates under NEPA including local policy or plan consistency review and participation in the decision making process as a cooperating agency.
