American Diabetes Month

WHEREAS, according to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017 issued by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) 30.3 million people, or 9.4% of the population in the United States 18 years
or older, had diabetes in 2015. The percentage of adults with diabetes increases with age, reaching a high
of 25.2% among those aged 65 years or older; and,

WHEREAS, the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017 also reported an estimated 1.5 million new cases
of Diabetes were diagnosed among United States adults aged 18 years of age or older in 2015. More than
half of these new cases were among adults 45 to 64 years of age, and the numbers were about equal for men
and women; and,

WHEREAS, according to the Department of Health, diabetes is a serious disease with potentially life-
threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and amputation of limbs; and,

WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness about the causes and prevention steps such as eating well, staying active,
and a healthy body wight are necessary to put a stop to the diabetes epidemic;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Ben McDaniel, Chairman of Curry County Commission, do hereby proclaim the month
of November 2017 as American Diabetes Month and encourage all citizens of Curry County to live a more healthy lifestyle
and take steps towards preventing diabetes
