Curry County to Receive $116,597 Grant

Curry County is pleased to announce that the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, working in tandem with Curry County Administration, has been awarded a grant in the amount of $116,597 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), COPS Hiring Program (CHP). CHP provides grant funding directly to state, local, or tribal law enforcement agencies to support the hiring of additional law enforcement officers for three years to address specific crime problems through community policing strategies.

On November 20, 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced $98,495,397 in grant funding through the COPS Hiring Program; these funds were awarded to 179 law enforcement agencies across the nation, which will allow for the hiring of 802 additional full-time law enforcement officers. Although a substantial amount of money, due to the high demand and limited funding available, only about 16 percent of the total number of agencies that applied were ultimately funded.  The COPS Office received applications from 1,119 law enforcement agencies requesting 3,094 officer positions totaling more than $409,028,743 in federal funding.

County Manager Lance Pyle stated “We are very excited to receive this funding; this is a highly competitive grant program and Curry County is one of only three agencies in New Mexico that were funded.” Curry County plans to use this grant to hire one career law enforcement officer, with sworn authority, to be assigned to the Curry County Courthouse and address threats and possible threats made against the structure and the citizens of our community.  Pyle also commended Administrative Services Coordinator, Doria Rey, on all of her hard work through the research and application process. “She helped to bring this grant to Curry County and will administer the grant for the next three years on behalf of the County.” Pyle said.
