Dangers of Open Burning

Curry County and its volunteer fire departments are urging residents to use caution during the traditional spring clean-up season.

The spring season is quickly approaching and property owners traditionally begin burning weeds and other vegetation around their property.  “Fire departments usually see an increased number of calls for service due to open burns becoming out-of-control,” said David Kube, Fire and Safety Director for Curry County.

The spring winds can become strong in a short time and cause even small fires to spread quickly to surrounding properties and homes, resulting in significant property losses.  When burning, property owners should be in attendance at all times and have a readily available water supply.

Curry County Fire Ordinance 2016-03 allows for certain unrestricted open burning and fires must be thoroughly extinguished to prevent rekindling of the fire.  Property owners are also reminded to notify their local fire department or the Clovis Fire Department Dispatch at 575-769-1921 prior to burning.

The Curry County fire ordinance can be viewed on the County website at www.currycounty.org.

For additional information, contact David Kube at 575-763-6016.
