Curry County to Participate in the National Education Association’s “Read Across America Day”

Friday, March 1, 2019 marks the 21st Anniversary of the National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day. Curry County Commissioners, Elected Officials, County Manager and Department Heads will be celebrating this occasion by reading their favorite Dr. Seuss books to kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade children in schools across our community. Curry County also affirmed their commitment to reading and the principle that educational investment is the key to the community’s well-being and long-term quality of life with a Proclamation read at the February 19, 2019 Commission Meeting.

This year’s schedule is as follows:

County Commissioner District 2 – Ben McDaniel – Parkview Elementary
County Commissioner District 3 – Chet Spear – Mesa Elementary
County Commissioner District 4 – Seth Martin – Melrose Elementary
County Manager, Lance Pyle – Zia Elementary School
County Clerk – Annie Hogland – Texico Elementary
County Treasurer – Debbie Spriggs – Sandia Elementary
County Assessor – Candace Morrison – Arts Academy at Bella Vista Elementary
County Under Sheriff – Michael Brockett – Grady Elementary
County Finance Director – Carol Pipes – Lockwood Elementary
County IT Director – Todd Ulses – Barry Elementary
County Facilities Maintenance Superintendent – Ben Roberts – Cameo Elementary

NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.  In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop NEA's Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages.

Curry County agrees that motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers and wants you to remind you:

You're never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You're never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you've got.

In schools and communities,
Let's gather around,
Let's pick up a book,
Let's pass it around.

There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug,
Someone to read.

Come join us March 2nd
Your own special way
And make this America's
Read to Kids Day.
