Proclamation Declaring March 2019 as National Nutrition Month
DECLARING MARCH 2019 AS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
WHEREAS, National Nutrition Month focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits; and
WHEREAS, in 2011 the USDA updated and introduced MyPlate. MyPlate replaces the older food pyramid and is designed to look like a place setting with the five food groups divided on the plate with dairy in the cup. MyPlate reminds us to make smarter and healthier food choices in our daily meals; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control reports that in 2015, 43.1% of adults did not eat any fruits every day and 21.5% did not eat any vegetables every day and in 2017 students aged 9- 12, 44.6% did not eat any fruits daily and 39.5% did not eat any vegetables daily; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico Indicator Based Information System known as NMIBIS reflects that in 2017, 12.9% of adults in Curry County had 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily which is down from the 2013 report that states an average of 14.9% of adults had 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables; and
WHEREAS, there is a strong need for continuing nutrition education and a wide-scale effort to enhance healthy eating practices in people of all ages, with that in mind, on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the Curry County Health Council and Plains Regional Medical Center in partnership with the Curry County Agriculture Extension Office will host a nutritional food demonstration workshop to be held in the Cannon Room at Plains Regional Medical Center; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Chet Spear do hereby proclaim March 2019 as National Nutrition Month for Curry County and I call upon everyone to learn and practice the importance of and to eat healthy balanced meals every day.
