National County Government Month - April 2019

WHEREAS, the nation’s 3,069 counties serving more than 300 million Americans provide essential services to create healthy, safe and vibrant communities; and

WHEREAS, in order to remain healthy, vibrant and safe, America’s counties provide public health, justice, safety, infrastructure, transportation, technology, environmental stewardship and economic services that play a key role in everything from residents’ daily commutes to emergency response; and

WHEREAS, Curry County and all counties take pride in our responsibility to protect and enhance the health, welfare and safety of our residents in efficient and cost-effective ways; and

WHEREAS, through National Association of Counties President Greg Cox’s “Connecting the Unconnected” initiative, NACo is demonstrating how counties deliver “people-centered” services to our residents nationwide; and

WHEREAS, each year since 1991 the National Association of Counties has encouraged counties across the country to elevate awareness of county responsibilities, programs and services; and

WHEREAS, in July 2013 Curry County received a second-place award from the National Association of Counties for presenting educational and creative methods for increasing public awareness of County programs and services; and

WHEREAS, Curry County plans to continue recognizing and showcasing National County Government Month by doing a coloring contest for students in kindergarten through eighth grade with grades third through eighth each coloring a different component of the County seal, taking applications from local high school students for selection of County Manager or Elected Department Head for a day, and other youth-based, government education activities; and

WHEREAS, the County has several programs and events throughout the year to promote the County and reading in our County, such as the Curry County Imagination Library Program and Read Across America; and

WHEREAS, the County Manager and other Department Heads will visit pre-schools; four and five-year olds to share tidbits about County Government, read “Blue Sky” by Audrey Wood, and provide each student their own copy donated by Scholastic; and

WHEREAS, on April 2, 2019 Curry County will recognize the 105 Retired and Senior Volunteers and 14 Foster Grandparents for their exemplary service of “Connecting the Unconnected” in our communities for the National Service Recognition Day with a proclamation and an afternoon reception; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Chet Spear, Chairman, do hereby proclaim April 2019 as National County Government Month and encourage all county officials, employees, schools and residents to participate in county government celebration activities.
