National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – April 27, 2019

WHEREAS, Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse; and

WHEREAS, Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision; and

WHEREAS, It is reported that 6 million Americans misuse controlled prescription drugs; and

WHEREAS, According to the 2018 New Mexico Community Survey, 11.8% of Curry County residents self- reported using pain killers for any reason, and

WHEREAS, Two thirds of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends, from the home medicine cabinet; and

WHEREAS, According to the 2017 Annual Strategies for Success survey, 4.7% of Curry County High School students self-reported using prescription drugs to get high, and

WHEREAS, Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold, and unused drugs that are flushed can contaminate the water supply; and

WHEREAS, Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment and take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs; and

WHEREAS, Curry County collected 56 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications during the DEA Take Back Event in October 2018.

WHEREAS, The Curry County Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and the Curry County Health Council are excited to partner in the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event that will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Roden Smith Pharmacy, located at 305 Llano Estacado Blvd, Clovis, NM, and 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Walgreens, located at 700 E 21st Street, Clovis, NM.

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Curry County does hereby proclaim April 27, 2019 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and encourages all residents to participate by turning-in unused or expired medication for safe disposal and helping to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.
