Proclamation Declaring May 2019 as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month
DECLARING MAY 2019 AS ASTHMA AND ALLERGY AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 in 13 people in the United States have asthma, that’s more than 26 million Americans. This is 8.3% of adults and 8.3% of children. The number of people with asthma has been increasing since the early 1980’s in all groups of people; and
WHEREAS, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) states that currently there are about 6 million children under the age of 18 with asthma and that asthma is the leading cause of death in children; and
WHEREAS, the AAFA goes on to state that asthma is the third-leading cause of hospitalization in America for children younger than 15 years of age; and
WHEREAS, AAFA reports that more than 50 million Americans experience various types of allergies each year and that allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says the annual cost of allergies exceeds $18 billion a year; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico’s Emergency Medication in Schools Act law directs each New Mexico local education district to adopt a written policy that meets its students’ needs for prescription and non-prescription drugs including stocking albuterol for respiratory emergencies and epinephrine for allergic reactions. Overall, New Mexico meets 18 of 23 core policy standards and 6 of 13 credit indicators; and
WHEREAS, according to the New Mexico Indicator Based Information System (NM-IBIS) an estimated 150,000 adults and 47,000 children currently have asthma in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, NM-IBIS also indicates that from the latest data of 2010-2013 Curry County is the 2nd highest County in the state for asthma hospital admissions for adults and the highest in the State for asthma hospital admissions in children from birth to 14 years of age for the same years.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Chairman of Curry County Commission, do hereby proclaim the month of May as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and encourage the citizens of Curry County to visit the doctor, work to avoid allergy triggers, and take measures to control you or your child’s asthma.
