Recycling and Illegal Dumping Act FY19-20 Grant

The New Mexico Environment Dept. Solid Waste Bureau and Recycling and Illegal Dumping Alliance has awarded Curry County a grant in the amount of $8,800 to ensure scrap tires get to the proper recycling facility and don’t end up blighting our community, destroying our resources,or harming our neighbors. This program assists New Mexico communities to implement projects that will help protect the health of the environment and residents of New Mexico now and for future generations.

The Curry County Road Department spends hundreds of hours cleaning-up and hauling-off tires that have been dumped along roadways. This improper tire disposal can lead to issues that harm the environment and the health of the people. For example, tire fires can pollute the air and contaminate the ground, which endangers ground and surface waters, including the water we drink. Tire dumps and improperly discarded tires are ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes, rodents, and snakes. Curry County wants to protect the environment and the health of our community by using this grant to host quarterly Tire Amnesty Days for the residents of our County. For four consecutive days each quarter, Curry County, working in conjunction with the City of Clovis Landfill, will offer each County household the opportunity to turn-in up to nine passenger tires; which will then be placed in shipping containers and transported to a tire recycling facility in Denver City, Texas. Curry County hopes this project will help to stop improper tire disposal, giving the residents of our community a clean place to live free from harmful diseases and unsightly stockpiles.
