PROCLAMATION

 

National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month – October 2019

 

WHEREAS, National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month (NMAAM) is an annual campaign, observed throughout the month of October, to raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter medicine abuse; and,

WHEREAS, the misuse and abuse of these medicines can be extremely dangerous and can result in death or other serious side effects; and

WHEREAS, the Office of National Drug Control Policy reports that medicine abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the U.S., and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has classified medicine abuse as an epidemic; and,

WHEREAS, pursuant to the New Mexico Substance Use Epidemiology Profile, December 2018 edition, 36% of unintentional drug overdose deaths in New Mexico were caused by prescription drugs; and,

WHEREAS, according to the 2018 New Mexico Community Survey, 11.8% of Curry County residents self- reported using pain killers for any reason; and,

WHEREAS, the National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month promotes the message that over-the-counter and prescription medicines are to be taken only as labeled or prescribed, and that using such medicines to get high or in large doses can cause serious and/or life-threatening consequences, and,

WHEREAS, the Curry County Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and Roden-Smith Pharmacy will participate in the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month initiative that will be held throughout October by disseminating pharmacy prescription bags as a media tool to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse.

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Curry County Chairman, do hereby proclaim October 2019 as National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month in Curry County and encourage all residents to safely dispose of all unused or expired medication at Roden-Smith Pharmacy, 305 Llano Estacado, Clovis, NM 88101 or at other safe disposal sites.
