Proclamation Declaring October 2019 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month
DECLARING OCTOBER 2019 AS
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness month is a worldwide annual campaign in October, involving thousands of organizations, to highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research; and
WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women; and,
WHEREAS, increasing the public's knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can save lives; and,
WHEREAS, in 2016, there was a rate of 106.6 per 100,000 women newly diagnosed in the state of New Mexico; and,
WHEREAS, according to the 2013 – 2017 New Mexico Indicator-Based Information System (NM-IBIS), the average rate of female breast cancer deaths in Curry County is 16.2 per 100,000; and,
WHEREAS, as we display pink ribbons and wear pink clothing to raise awareness, we also support those courageously fighting breast cancer and honor the lives lost to the disease; and,
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness month is an opportunity to unite all citizens in our community to prevent breast cancer deaths through increased education and regular screening; and,
WHEREAS, this October, we recognize breast cancer survivors, those currently battling the disease, friends and families of a diagnosed patient, and applaud the efforts of our medical professionals and researchers working to find a cure.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Curry County Chairman, do hereby proclaim October 2019 as: Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Curry County and encourages all employees and residents to raise awareness by wearing pink on October 15, 2019.
