Proclaming October 2019 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

WHEREAS, domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages, gender, and income levels; and

WHEREAS, Domestic violence is widespread and affects over four million Americans each year, according to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence; and

WHEREAS, and on any given day more than 20,000 phone calls are made to domestic violence hotlines nationwide; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence costs the nation over 8.3 billion dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters, foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity as reported by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence; and

WHEREAS, according to Donna Horton, Executive Director of the Hartley House in Clovis New Mexico the Hartley House assisted 400 clients in 2019, these were victims and children, as well as offenders of domestic violence and provided over 3,000 shelter nights. Hartley House is just one (1) of the 31organizations in New Mexico that provide domestic violence services at some level: and

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services, and assistance to victims;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Chairman of Curry County Commission, do hereby designate the month of October, 2019 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urge the citizens of Curry County to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community.
