National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – October 26, 2019

WHEREAS, it is reported that 6 million Americans misuse controlled prescription drugs; and,

WHEREAS, Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision; and,

WHEREAS, according to the New Mexico Substance Use Epidemiology Profile, dated December 2018, 36% of unintentional drug overdose deaths in New Mexico were caused by prescription drugs; and,

WHEREAS, it is reported that between 2013 and 2015, the rate of opioid overdose related emergency department visits increased by 82% in New Mexico; and,

WHEREAS, according to the 2018 New Mexico Community Survey, 11.8% of Curry County residents self- reported using pain killers for any reason; and,

WHEREAS, unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse; and,

WHEREAS, unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold, and unused drugs that are flushed can contaminate the water supply; and,

WHEREAS, the proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives, protects the environment and take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs; and,

WHEREAS, Curry County collected 109 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications during the DEA Take Back Event held on April 27, 2019; and,

WHEREAS, The Curry County Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, the Curry County Health Council, and local law enforcement agencies encourage all of the residents of Curry County to participate in the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event which will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Roden Smith Pharmacy, located at 305 Llano Estacado Blvd, Clovis, NM, and 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Walgreens, located at 700 E 21st Street, Clovis, NM.

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Curry County Chairman, do hereby proclaim October 26, 2019 as National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and encourages all residents to participate by turning-in all of their unused or expired medication for safe disposal and helping to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.
