National Diabetes Month – November 2019

November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The Curry County Health Council, with the support of the Curry County Board of Commissioners, is working to educate and encourage the citizens of Curry County to live a healthier lifestyle and take steps towards preventing diabetes.

National Diabetes Month – November 2019

 “Take Diabetes to Heart:  Linking Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease”

WHEREAS, according to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017 issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 30.3 million people, or 9.4% of the Americans 18 years or older, had diabetes in 2015. The percentage of adults with diabetes increases with age, reaching a high of 25.2% among those aged 65 years or older; and

WHEREAS, the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017 also reported an estimated 1.5 million new cases of Diabetes were diagnosed among United States adults aged 18 years of age or older in 2015. More than half of these new cases were among adults 45 to 64 years of age, and the numbers were about equal for men and women; and,

WHEREAS, according to the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for 2016-2019 completed by Presbyterian Healthcare Services in partnership with the Curry County Health Council, 8.5% of adults 20 years of age or older in Curry County have been diagnosed with diabetes as compared to 7.17% of adults 20 years of age and older overall in New Mexico; and

WHEREAS, according to the Department of Health, diabetes is a serious disease with potentially life­ threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation of limbs; and,

WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness about the causes of diabetes and prevention steps such as stopping smoking or using other tobacco products; managing A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels; developing or maintaining healthy lifestyle habits; and taking medicines as prescribed by doctors are necessary to put a stop to the Diabetes epidemic; and

WHEREAS, The Curry County Health Council will engage in National Diabetes month by implementing a social media campaign, which will capture attention, involve recipients, and motivate action that empowers individuals to take steps to manage diabetes and lower chances of heart disease or a stroke.

NOW THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Robert Thornton, Curry County Vice-Chairman, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2019 as National Diabetes Month and encourage all citizens of Curry County to live a healthier lifestyle and take steps towards preventing diabetes.
