WHEREAS, January is when the American Red Cross celebrates National Blood Donor Month and recognizes the lifesaving contributions made by blood and platelet donors. These donors have been recognized in January since 1970 with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during winter, a difficult time of year to collect enough blood product to meet patient needs; and

WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (WHO) states “blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person-the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components-red cells, platelets, and plasma.”; and

WHEREAS, Vitalant, formerly Blood Services, states that about 40% of the US population can donate blood but less than 10% actually do; and

WHEREAS, someone needs blood every few seconds in the United States, and more than 4.5 million Americans would die every year without lifesaving transfusions according to the American Red Cross; and

WHEREAS, Vitalant needs 12,000 blood donations every single day to maintain an appropriate blood supply; and

WHEREAS, the Journal of Epidemiology reports that blood donors are 88% less likely to have a heart attack; and

WHEREAS, Vitalant states that each year donated blood is sent to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is then distributed, as blood supplies are needed, to 48 different hospitals in the State of New Mexico; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Seabrease, Senior Donor Recruitment Representative of Vitalant reports that Curry County and Portales together have seen 801 eligible donors and collected over 1000 blood products. Curry County Administration blood drives have produced 52 of those eligible donors and Vitalant has collected 66 of the 1000 blood products from those donors.

WHEREAS, the Curry County Health Council (CCHC) will be holding a blood drive on January 24, 2020 from 11 AM – 2:30 PM in the parking lot of 417 Gidding St; and

WHEREAS, the community can call Curry County Community Services Administrator, Nikki Lovett at (575) 763-6016 ext. 132 to sign up; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Curry County Commission, does hereby proclaim the Month of January 2020 as National Blood Donor Month and encourage the citizens of Curry County to give the gift of life this year and donate to a local blood drive.

DONE, this 14th day of January, 2020.
