American Heart Month

WHEREAS, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. The
Department of Health and Human Services states that every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Health and Human Services goes on to say that heart disease can often be
prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that heart disease and the conditions
that lead to it can happen at any age. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among younger people (ages
35-64) are putting them at risk for heart disease earlier in life; and
WHEREAS, among those risk factors are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. More than 37
million US adults are current smokers, and thousands of young people start smoking each day. Smoking
damages the blood vessels and can cause heart disease as well as cancer; and
WHEREAS, other risk factors are: obesity, more than 1 in 3 Americans and nearly 1 in 6 children ages 2 to 19
are obese, diabetes, nearly 1 in 10 people in the United States have diabetes, physical inactivity, only 1 in 5
adults meets the guidelines of getting 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, and unhealthy eating patterns;
WHEREAS, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) estimates that approximately 4,000 New
Mexicans die every year from heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is consistently the first or second leading
cause of death among both men and women in New Mexico annually. Stroke is the 5 th leading cause; and
WHEREAS, Friday, February 1, 2019 is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about the risks everyone
faces for heart disease and stroke. The Curry County Health Council (CCHC) and the Board of Curry County
Commission encourages the community to wear something red on that day and take pictures to be displayed on
the Curry County and CCHC websites to show our support and awareness for the cause; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chairman of Curry County Commission, do hereby
proclaim the month of February as American Heart Month and encourage the citizens of Curry County to be
aware and wear red on Friday, February 1.
