February 2019 National Children's Dental Month

PROCLAMATION
FEBRUARY 2019 AS NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL MONTH

WHEREAS, the American Dental Association has made February, National Children's Dental Health Month,
and with the Give Kids A Smile program dental professional across the nation will provide free dental care to
approximately 450,000 children and adolescents from underserved families throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, National Children's Dental Health observances began with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and
a one-week event in Akron, Ohio, in February 1941. The single day observance became a week-long event in
1955, and in 1981 , the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children 's
Dental Health Month.; and

WHEREAS, the National Institutes of Health reports that some 80% of tooth decay in this country is suffered by
25% of its children; and

WHEREAS, for every child under 18-years old without medical insurance, there are at least two children without
dental insurance, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and

WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control states that nearly one in four children under the age of five already
have cavities; and

WHEREAS, New Mexico Department of Health recommends to reduce your child's risk of tooth decay by
helping your children develop good brushing and flossing habits, eating healthy foods, limiting sugary foods and
drinks, limiting time between meals and snacks, and scheduling regular dental visits; and

WHEREAS, for National Children's Dental Health Month, Curry County has obtained books titled "Let's Meet
A Dentist" by Bridget Heos and Kyle Poling that County Manager Lance Pyle will read and provide to first-grade
students at Grady Municipal Schools on February 6th and Melrose Municipal Schools on February 28th; and

WHEREAS, Marylou Johns, Community Relations Coordinator for Familia Dental, will be providing tooth
brushes and tooth paste to the first graders in Melrose and Grady.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chet Spear, Chairman of Curry County Commission, do
hereby proclaim February as National Children's Dental Health Month and encourage the citizens of Curry
County to be aware of children's dental concerns and schedule appointments for their children's dental care.
