Read Across America Day Proclamation

PROCLAMATION Declaring March 1, 2019 as

National Education Association’s Read Across America Day

 

WHEREAS, the citizens of Curry County stand firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future, and their ability to compete in a global economy; and

WHEREAS, Curry County has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of our youth, through events like this and programs such as the Imagination Library of Curry County; while remaining grounded in the principle that educational investment is key to the community's well-being and long-term quality of life; and

WHEREAS, such initiatives include Curry County using $200 in gift certificates from Better World Books to purchase books for National Children’s Dental Health Month, being awarded 140 books from Scholastic to donate to children throughout Curry County, and enrolling 1,201 children in the Curry County Imagination Library Program, which has mailed a total of 30,634 books since October 2014; and

WHEREAS, "National Education Association’s Read Across America," a national celebration of Dr. Seuss' 115th birthday on March 2, 2019, promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of our community's students;

WHEREAS, on March 1, 2019 the Commissioners, County Manager, Elected Officials and Department Heads will be visiting schools in our community to read their favorite Dr. Seuss books to our students and future leaders;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Chet Spear, Chairman, call on all citizens of Curry County to participate and assure that every child is in a safe place reading together with a caring adult on March 1, 2019;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Curry County Commission endorses "National Education Association's Read Across America" and requests our community to engage in programs and activities to help make America's children the best readers in the world.
